EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Prince Chichibu of Japan, whose given name was Asaka Takahito, is seen on the left, standing next to the renowned British aviation pioneer, Captain Geoffrey de Havilland. The image, taken in 1937, likely depicts Prince Chichibu examining a de Havilland DH90 Dragonfly aircraft. Prince Chichibu, the second son of Emperor Taisho and the younger brother of Emperor Showa, was known for his passion for aviation. He became the first Japanese prince to earn a pilot's license in 1925, and later established the Imperial Japanese Navy's first flying club in 1927. Prince Chichibu's dedication to aviation was a significant factor in the growth of Japan's military and civilian aviation industries. Captain Geoffrey de Havilland, on the right, was a British aviation pioneer and the founder of de Havilland Aircraft Company. He was responsible for designing and manufacturing several influential aircraft, including the DH90 Dragonfly. This versatile biplane was popular among both military and civilian aviation circles, and its sleek design and impressive performance made it a favorite among pilots. In this photograph, Prince Chichibu and Captain de Havilland share a moment of mutual respect and admiration for their shared passion for aviation. The image is a testament to the international connections and collaborations that drove the development of aviation technology in the pre-World War II era.
