EDITORS COMMENTS
In this beautiful photograph, Princess Alice of the United Kingdom (1843-1878), the second daughter and third child of Queen Victoria, is captured in a tender moment with her eldest child, Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine (1863-1950). The scene unfolds in Scotland, where Princess Alice had traveled to give birth to her first child in the comfort of her mother's presence. Princess Alice had married Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse and by Rhine in 1861, and the couple lived in the German Duchy of Hesse. When it was time for her to give birth, Alice returned to her mother's side in Scotland for support and reassurance. Queen Victoria, who had already given birth to nine children of her own, was more than willing to provide comfort and care to her daughter during this significant moment in her life. The photograph, taken in 1863, shows Princess Alice cradling her newborn daughter, Victoria, who would later become the grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The image is a poignant reminder of the close bond between mother and daughter, as well as the enduring connection between the British and German royal families. Princess Alice tragically passed away in 1878 at the young age of 35, leaving behind her husband and their five children. Her legacy, however, continues to live on through her descendants, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who have maintained strong ties between the British and German royal houses to this day. This photograph is a precious piece of history, capturing a moment of love and connection between a mother and her child, as well as the deep-rooted relationships between the royal families of the United Kingdom and Germany.
