EDITORS COMMENTS
This detail from the Monument to the Discoveries in Lisbon, Portugal, showcases a gathering of prominent figures who played pivotal roles in Portugal's Age of Discoveries. From left to right, we see the chronicler Gomes Eanes de Zurara, traveler Pero da Covilha, cosmographer Jacome de Maiorca, navigators Pedro Escobar, Pedro Nunes, Pero de Alenquer, Gil Eanes, Joao Goncalves Zarco, Infante Fernando, and Henry the Navigator. Henry the Navigator, depicted on the right, was a key figure in Portugal's maritime exploration during the late 15th century. His dedication to exploring the world beyond the known map led to the discovery of new trade routes and territories, including the Madeira and Azores islands, and the west coast of Africa. Infante Fernando, the Saint Prince, is shown next to Henry. He was the son of King John I of Portugal and played a crucial role in supporting his brother's exploratory endeavors. His patronage of Henry and the explorers contributed significantly to Portugal's maritime expansion. The Monument to the Discoveries, also known as Padrão dos Descobrimentos, was designed by Portuguese architects Jose Cottinelli Telmo and Tomas Aragão and completed in 1940. It stands as a testament to Portugal's rich maritime history and the explorers who made it possible.
