Portsmouth - Illuminated Tram Car to celebrate French Fleet
Portsmouth - An illuminated Tram Car, decorated to celebrate the French Fleet stationed in Portsmouth during 1905. The Star and Crescent symbol has been used by the City of Portsmouth as its coat of arms since at least the seventeenth century and probably much longer. This symbol is also widely used as an Islamic symbol and is found on the flags of many Islamic nations, and came to Portsmouth due to links via King Richard I to Constantinople and Isaac Comnenus of Cyprus (who captured Richard) during the Third Crusade. Date: 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases an illuminated Tram Car in Portsmouth, England, proudly decorated to celebrate the French Fleet's presence in the city during 1905. The Star and Crescent symbol adorns the exterior of the tram, a long-standing emblem of Portsmouth's rich history. This symbol, which has been used by the city since at least the seventeenth century, holds significant meaning as it is also widely used as an Islamic symbol and can be found on the flags of numerous Islamic nations. The connection to Portsmouth stems from the city's links to Constantinople and Isaac Comnenus of Cyprus, who captured King Richard I during the Third Crusade. The Tricolore flags of France, with their blue, white, and red stripes, are also evident in the decoration, further emphasizing the celebration of the French Fleet's visit. The electric tram car, illuminated by intricate lighting, adds a magical and festive atmosphere to the scene. The Star and Crescent symbol, bathed in light, shines brightly against the night sky, symbolizing the long-standing cultural ties between Portsmouth and the Islamic world.
