EDITORS COMMENTS
Valerie Taylor, born in 1927, was an Australian pioneer in underwater photography and filmmaking, best known for her groundbreaking work in the field of shark research and conservation. Taylor's passion for the ocean began at a young age, and she spent her childhood exploring the waters around her hometown of Sydney. This photograph, taken by the Illustrated London News Ltd, captures Valerie Taylor in her element, as she swims gracefully through the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. With a mask and snorkel on her face, and a camera in hand, Taylor is completely at peace in her underwater world. Taylor's career began in the late 1940s when she started working as a swimwear model and underwater photographer for various Australian magazines. However, it was her collaboration with her husband, Ron Taylor, that truly propelled her into the limelight. Together, they founded the Underwater Film and Photography Unit in 1954, which became a leading force in underwater filmmaking and photography. Valerie Taylor's work has been featured in numerous documentaries, films, and television shows, including the iconic 1975 film "Jaws," where she served as a consultant and underwater stuntwoman. Her pioneering work in underwater photography and filmmaking has not only captured the beauty and mystery of the ocean but also raised awareness about the importance of shark conservation. This photograph is a testament to Taylor's enduring love for the ocean and her unwavering commitment to documenting its wonders. With her camera and her passion, Valerie Taylor continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
