EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the intensity and chaos of the storming and capture of Cadiz, Spain, by English and Dutch troops on 30 June 1596. During the Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1604), a joint Anglo-Dutch fleet, led by English admiral Lord Charles Howard and Dutch admiral Jacob van Heemskerck, laid siege to the city of Cadiz, a vital Spanish port and naval base. The defenders, outnumbered and outgunned, bravely held out against the relentless assault for over a month. On this fateful day, the English and Dutch troops, determined to take the city, scaled the formidable walls under heavy fire from the Spanish defenders. The photograph depicts the moment of breakthrough, with soldiers clambering over the ramparts and charging into the city. The chaos and confusion are palpable as the battle rages on below. The successful capture of Cadiz was a significant victory for the Anglo-Dutch alliance and dealt a heavy blow to Spanish power in the Atlantic. The city remained in English hands until 1597 when it was retaken by Spanish forces. This photograph, taken from a 16th-century account, provides a unique glimpse into the intense and pivotal moment of this historic battle.
