EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, we witness Queen Dido of Carthage in the act of preparing a ritual sacrifice to the goddess Juno. The scene takes place in the temple of the goddess, whose majestic columns and ornate decorations can be seen in the background. Dido, dressed in rich robes adorned with gold, wears a wreath of flowers on her head as she prepares for the sacred rite. The queen holds a large, gleaming axe in her right hand, poised above a pristine white bull that stands before her. The animal, its eyes wide with fear, is bound by ropes, its horns adorned with garlands. The air around the scene is thick with the scent of incense, and a small flame flickers at the altar, adding to the solemn atmosphere. The ritual sacrifice of a white bull to Juno was an important part of the Carthaginian religion, and it is believed that Dido herself was a devotee of the goddess. The sacrifice was believed to ensure the favor of Juno and protect the city of Carthage. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1843, provides a fascinating glimpse into the religious practices of ancient Carthage. The use of hand-coloring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a true work of art.
