EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the critically endangered Mongoose Lemur, Eulemur mongoz. The Mongoose Lemur, also known as the Red Ruffed Lemur or the Red Lemur, is a primate native to Madagascar. This engraving is based on an illustration by Jacques de Seve and was produced by Valentin Bischoff for Johann Christian Daniel Schreber's "Animal Illustrations after Nature," published in Erlangen, Germany, in 1775. The Mongoose Lemur is a medium-sized lemur with a distinctive red fur ruff around its neck and arms. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, flowers, and insects. They are also known to be arboreal, spending most of their time in trees. Unfortunately, the Mongoose Lemur is now critically endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting, and the pet trade. Their population is estimated to be fewer than 2,500 individuals, and they are found only in small, isolated populations in the eastern rainforests of Madagascar. This engraving is a beautiful reminder of the natural history of this fascinating and endangered species. It is a testament to the skill of the engraver, Valentin Bischoff, and the illustrator, Jacques de Seve, who captured the essence of the Mongoose Lemur over 245 years ago. Today, conservation efforts are underway to protect the Mongoose Lemur and its habitat, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the beauty and wonder of this unique primate.
