EDITORS COMMENTS
This print is a beautiful example of early 19th century British entomology, featuring the Coleoptera species Elater aterrimus, also known as Megapenthes lugens, depicted among the lush blades of Cock's-foot Grass (Dactylis glomerata). The intricately detailed illustration is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," published between 1824 and 1839. Curtis was a prominent figure in the scientific community of his time, and his meticulously produced entomological plates showcased the latest advances in the field. This particular plate, numbered 694, is part of the Ledipterous group, which includes beetles in the families Elateridae and Tenebrionidae. The Elater aterrimus, or the Dark Elater, is a striking beetle with a long, slender body and powerful, elongated legs. Its dark, metallic appearance is accentuated by the contrasting lighter markings on its elytra, or wing cases. The Megapenthes lugens, a related species, shares many similarities in appearance, but can be distinguished by the presence of a prominent, horn-like projection on the head of the male. The inclusion of the Cock's-foot Grass in the illustration serves to provide context and scale, as well as showcasing the natural habitat of these fascinating insects. The delicate rendering of the grass blades and the precise, almost three-dimensional representation of the beetles are testament to the skill and dedication of the artist and the scientific community of the time. This print offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the world of 19th century British entomology and the intricate details of the natural world that captivated the curiosity of scientists and collectors alike.
