EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts a male and female Brazilian horned frog, Ceratophrys aurita (also known as Ceratophrys varia), from the Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, or Natural History Picture Gallery, of Georg Friedrich Treitschke in Leipzig, Germany, published in 1840. The Brazilian horned frog is a remarkable amphibian native to South America, specifically in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The male frog in this image is easily identified by the prominent, horn-like structures above his eyes, which serve as displays of dominance and attractiveness to females. The female, on the other hand, lacks these horns but exhibits a more robust body size and distinct, warty skin. Both sexes have large, powerful limbs and broad, webbed feet, which enable them to be excellent swimmers and hunters in their aquatic habitats. The Brazilian horned frog is an ambush predator, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey to come within reach before striking with incredible speed and power. They primarily feed on insects, tadpoles, and other amphibians. Their large, sticky tongues allow them to capture prey with remarkable accuracy. This exquisite lithograph not only showcases the unique beauty of these fascinating creatures but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of the 19th-century natural history illustrations. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a captivating piece for any natural history or art collection.
