EDITORS COMMENTS
This monumental brass rubbing depicts Sir Robert Ingylton, Knight, and his three wives, a poignant testament to the complexities of medieval marriage. Dated to around 1472, the brass is located in the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Thornton, Buckinghamshire, England. Sir Robert, dressed in the regal attire of a knight, is shown in the center, his arms crossed in front of him, holding a sword. His three wives, each identified by an inscription, are arranged around him. The first wife, named Agnes, is shown on his right, her hands folded in prayer. The second wife, Margaret, is depicted on his left, her hands resting on a book, symbolizing her piety and learning. The third wife, whose name is unfortunately illegible, is shown at the bottom, her hands folded in her lap. The intricately detailed brass is a fine example of Gothic art from the 1470s. The inscriptions on the brass provide valuable information about the lives of the individuals depicted, as well as the social and cultural norms of the time. The presence of three wives suggests that Sir Robert was a wealthy and influential man, able to afford multiple marriages. The inclusion of his coat of arms further underscores his status. Brass rubbings, such as this one, were a popular way to create copies of important or decorative brasses for personal or devotional use during the Middle Ages. Today, they serve as important historical records and provide insights into the lives of people from the past. This particular brass rubbing is a striking reminder of the complexities of medieval marriage and the role of women in society during that time.
