EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the compassionate side of Martin Luther, the German theologian and religious reformer, during one of the most devastating periods in European history: the Great Plague of 1535. Luther, dressed in a simple robe and holding a Bible, is shown ministering to plague victims in their quarantined homes. The victims, weak and frail, are huddled together, their faces etched with fear and despair. The scene takes place in the city of Wittenberg, where Luther lived and taught. The plague, which ravaged Europe from 1347 to 1722, was one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. It spread rapidly, infecting millions and killing an estimated 75-200 million people. In the face of such devastation, Luther, who had been advocating for the importance of faith and good works, put his beliefs into action. He visited the sick, comforted the dying, and provided for the needs of the afflicted. Despite the risks to his own health, Luther continued to minister to the plague victims, believing that it was his duty to help alleviate their suffering. He also wrote extensively about the plague, urging people to turn to God in prayer and to practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease. This powerful photograph is a poignant reminder of the human capacity for compassion and resilience in the face of adversity. It also highlights the important role that religious leaders can play in providing comfort and support during times of crisis. Luther's actions during the plague not only helped to alleviate the suffering of those afflicted, but also solidified his reputation as a champion of the people and a true reformer.
