EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the Thomas Bankes Bible, published in 1787, we find Lot and his two daughters embarking on a perilous journey from the ruins of Sodom to the safety of Zoar. The Old Testament narrative in Genesis 19 recounts how Lot and his family were spared from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, but his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. With their world shattered and their loved ones lost, Lot and his daughters set out on foot, carrying what few possessions they could, and leaving behind the ashes of their former life. The daughters, clad in long robes and veils, walk carefully alongside their father, their faces etched with concern and determination. Lot, a man of advanced age, looks wearily ahead, his staff in hand and his heart heavy with the weight of loss and the uncertainty of their future. The desolate landscape around them, with its barren trees and rocky terrain, mirrors their own sense of desolation and despair. This powerful image, with its intricate details and subtle use of light and shadow, invites us to reflect on the human condition in the face of adversity. It reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit and the strength that can be found in family bonds, even in the darkest of times.
