EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, aviation pioneer Hubert Latham is depicted at Mourmelon-le-Grand in June 1909, standing proudly next to his Antoinette Monoplane. Although Latham is best known for his unsuccessful attempt to fly the English Channel in 1909, this image serves as a reminder of the many important successes he achieved in the realm of aviation. Latham's career began in 1907 when he made his first solo flight in a biplane. He quickly gained recognition for his flying skills and set several aviation records, including the longest distance flown in a single day and the longest non-stop flight. In 1908, he became the first person to fly a monoplane across the English Channel, although he did not make the crossing in one attempt. Despite his failure to fly the Channel in 1909, Latham continued to push the boundaries of aviation. In 1910, he made the first flight across the Mediterranean Sea, flying from Marseille, France, to Tunis, Tunisia. He also made significant contributions to the development of aircraft transport, designing and building a large monoplane that could carry passengers and cargo. This photograph captures Latham at a pivotal moment in his career, standing next to his Antoinette Monoplane at Mourmelon-le-Grand airfield. The determination and focus in his eyes speak volumes about his unwavering commitment to aviation and his desire to push the limits of what was thought possible. Despite his failure to fly the Channel in 1909, Latham's contributions to aviation history are undeniable, and this image serves as a testament to his enduring legacy.
