Lady Idina Wallace and her son by Madame Yevonde

Lady Idina Wallace, nee Sackville, eldest daughter of Lord de la Warr, and wife of Captain David Euan Wallace of the Household Cavalry. She married him, her first husband, in 1913, but divorced in 1919. Five-times married Idina would gain notoriety as part of the Happy Valley Set when she moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. With her serial marriages and reputation for debauched decadence, she inspired the character of The Bolter in Nancy Mitfords novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waughs Vile Bodies and the character Iris Storm in The Green Hat by Michael Arlen. Pictured in The Tatler in January with her elder son, David. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this portrait, Lady Idina Wallace, nee Sackville, poses with her elder son, David, in a playful moment captured by the renowned photographer Madame Yevonde in 1917. Lady Idina, the eldest daughter of Lord de la Warr, was married to Captain David Euan Wallace of the Household Cavalry in 1913. Their union, however, ended in divorce in 1919. Lady Idina's scandalous personal life would make headlines years later when she moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. Known as the "Happy Valley Set," this group of expatriates was notorious for their decadent and debauched lifestyle. Lady Idina's serial marriages and scandalous behavior inspired several literary characters, including The Bolter in Nancy Mitford's novels The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, and the character Iris Storm in Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. Despite the controversy that surrounded her later years, this portrait captures a more innocent time in Lady Idina's life. Her radiant white dress and the mischievous grin on her son's face add to the playful atmosphere of the photograph. The elegant composition and the soft focus of Madame Yevonde's lens create a timeless image that invites the viewer to ponder the complexities of Lady Idina's life beyond the headlines. This portrait is a captivating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied societal norms and left an indelible mark on history.
