Lady Idina Wallace

Lady Idina Wallace, nee Sackville, eldest daughter of Lord de la Warr, and wife of Captain David Euan Wallace of the Household Cavalry. She married him, her first husband, in 1913, but divorced in 1919. Five-times married Idina would gain notoriety as part of the Happy Valley Set when she moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. With her serial marriages and reputation for debauched decadence, she inspired the character of The Bolter in Nancy Mitfords novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waughs Vile Bodies and the character Iris Storm in The Green Hat by Michael Arlen. She is pictured here in The Tatler in 1918, who notes that she is a very capable amateur actress and during the war appeared in many performances in aid of war funds. Date: 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
Lady Idina Wallace, nee Sackville, a notorious figure of the Jazz Age and the British social scene, is depicted in this portrait from The Tatler in 1918. Born as the eldest daughter of Lord de la Warr, Lady Idina married her first husband, Captain David Euan Wallace of the Household Cavalry, in 1913, but their union ended in divorce in 1919. Known for her serial marriages and reputation for debauched decadence, she would later gain infamy as part of the Happy Valley Set when she moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. This image captures Lady Idina in her youthful beauty, adorned with a pearl necklace and a mischievous expression, as she engages in a moment of quiet reflection while reading. Her striking white dress and the elegant setting further accentuate her allure. Despite her scandalous reputation, Lady Idina was also an accomplished amateur actress. During the war, she graced the stage in numerous performances to raise funds for war efforts. Her larger-than-life persona and serial marriages would go on to inspire the characters of The Bolter in Nancy Mitford's novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, and the character Iris Storm in Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the enigmatic and captivating world of Lady Idina Wallace, a woman who defied societal norms and left an indelible mark on history.
