EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph depicts the iconic Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, a marvel of ancient engineering and architectural brilliance that continues to captivate the world. The image is taken from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published between 1835 and 1840. Goedsche's ethnographic and anthropological collection aimed to document various cultures and customs from around the globe, making this print a valuable historical record. The Great Pyramids, built as tombs for Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure and their queens during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods, have stood the test of time for over 4,500 years. The largest pyramid, the Pyramid of Khufu, is the oldest and the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence. The pyramids are located on the Giza plateau, on the outskirts of modern-day El Giza, a suburb of Cairo. The lithograph offers a detailed and colorful representation of the pyramids, with the Pyramid of Khafre appearing slightly smaller than the other two, as it is indeed the case in reality. The Sphinx, the mythical guardian of the pyramids, is also visible in the background, adding to the mystique and grandeur of this ancient site. The intricate details in the print, such as the hieroglyphics and the shadows cast by the structures, bring the image to life, transporting us back in time to witness the awe-inspiring beauty and historical significance of the Great Pyramids of Giza.
