EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tragic moment at the 1913 Epsom Derby, known as the 'Greatest Horserace in the World,' when suffragette Emily Davison sacrificed her life for the cause of women's right to vote. The image, taken by an anonymous photographer for Illustrated London News, shows the King's horse, Anmer, in mid-fall after Emily, dressed in a purple, white, and green sash representing the WSPU (Women's Social and Political Union), darted in front of it. The horse's hooves can be seen kicking up clouds of dust as the rider, King George V's jockey, is thrown off. Emily Davison, a dedicated suffragette, had long advocated for women's suffrage through various means, including hunger strikes and protests. On Derby Day, she sought to draw attention to the cause by attempting to attach a banner to the King's horse. However, her plan went awry when she misjudged the timing and was struck down instead. She was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries several days later, becoming a martyr for the suffrage movement. This historical photograph, with its poignant and powerful imagery, serves as a reminder of the determination and courage of the suffragettes and the significant impact their protests had on the political landscape. The fall of the King's horse at the 1913 Derby is a pivotal moment in British history, and this photograph stands as a testament to the sacrifices made in the pursuit of women's suffrage.
