Born in 1685 as the son of Emperor Leopold I, Carlos found himself in a contentious succession dispute following the death of his childless aunt, Anna of Austria, who was the last Spanish Habsburg monarch. Despite being recognized as the rightful heir by the Holy Roman Empire and some European powers, Carlos faced opposition from the powerful Bourbon dynasty, represented by Philip of Anjou, who was backed by France and other allies. Carlos's brief and tumultuous reign, which began in 1700, was marked by numerous military campaigns and political intrigues. His mental and physical health deteriorated rapidly, and he was eventually deposed in 1706.
