EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Carlos VI (III), the enigmatic claimant to the Spanish throne in the early 18th century. Born in 1685 as the son of Emperor Leopold I, Carlos found himself in a contentious succession dispute following the death of his childless aunt, Anna of Austria, who was the last Spanish Habsburg monarch. Despite being recognized as the rightful heir by the Holy Roman Empire and some European powers, Carlos faced opposition from the powerful Bourbon dynasty, represented by Philip of Anjou, who was backed by France and other allies. Carlos's brief and tumultuous reign, which began in 1700, was marked by numerous military campaigns and political intrigues. His mental and physical health deteriorated rapidly, and he was eventually deposed in 1706. The ensuing Spanish Succession War, which lasted from 1701 to 1714, engulfed Europe in a devastating conflict, pitting the Habsburgs and their allies against the Bourbons. This evocative print bears the authentic autograph of Carlos VI (III), adding a unique historical touch to its visual allure. The inscription below the image reads, "Carlos VI, by the grace of God, King of Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre, Granada, Toledo, Galicia, Valencia, Seville, Sardinia, Corsica, and the Indies, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, Brabant, Luxembourg, and Flanders, Count of Habsburg, Tyrol, and Gorizia, Margrave of Austria, Burgundy, and the Austrian lands, etc." This testament to Carlos's vast territorial claims underscores the complex web of political alliances and power struggles that characterized the European political landscape during this period. The haunting eyes of Carlos VI (III) in this print seem to convey a sense of determination and resilience in the face of adversity, making it a poignant reminder of the intricate and often tumultuous history of European royalty and the Spanish Succession.
