This haunting image captures the tragic fate of the Princess of Lamballe, a noblewoman of the French court who unwittingly found herself embroiled in the dangerous world of Freemasonry during the turbulent 1890s. The Princess, whose real name was Marie-Louise-Elisabeth de Bourbon, was initiated into the secretive society in the hope that it would help protect her during the French Revolution. However, once she became aware of the revolutionary projects being planned by the Lodge, she attempted to withdraw her membership. Unfortunately, her decision came too late. The revolutionary fervor that had gripped France during the late 19th century was not easily quelled, and the Princess became a target for the radical mob. In this chilling photograph, she is shown being led through the streets of Paris, surrounded by a violent and angry crowd.
