Construction of a new terminal building and piers, extensions to runways, and a new Maglev system at Birmingham Airport began in May 1981. The new terminal building was located on the opposite side of the site to the existing terminal at Elmdon. It was built using a structural steel frame around a central well, with precast floor and roof units, and was clad in glassfibre reinforced concrete. The three-storey building had a floor area of 16, 000 sq metres. It was later known as Terminal 1
