London Bridge City JLP01_10_22757
London Bridge City, Southwark, Greater London. A view looking east over the London Bridge City complex, showing HMS Belfast moored on the River Thames with Tower Bridge beyond.
Various buildings within this complex of offices, flats and shops on Tooley Street in London Bridge City were built by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group who redeveloped the former Hays Wharf site on the south bank of the River Thames. The redevelopment of the site took place over 2 1/2 years between 1985-1988 and included No.1 London Bridge, Cottons, Hays Galleria and 29-33 Tooley Street. At the time, it was the biggest building contract in London and was one of the largest construction projects in the country

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling London Bridge City complex in Southwark, Greater London. The view looks eastward, showcasing the iconic HMS Belfast gracefully moored on the River Thames with Tower Bridge majestically standing beyond. The buildings within this vibrant complex were meticulously constructed by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group, who embarked on a remarkable redevelopment project of the former Hays Wharf site. Over 2 and a half years between 1985 and 1988, No. 1 London Bridge, Cottons, Hays Galleria, and 29-33 Tooley Street emerged as magnificent structures that now house offices, flats, and shops. Notably significant at its time of completion was that this project stood as one of the largest construction endeavors in the country while also being hailed as London's most extensive building contract. This photograph beautifully encapsulates an urban landscape frozen in time during the 1980s. The waterscape adds an enchanting touch to this cityscape panorama captured by A© Historic England Archive. It serves as a testament to both architectural prowess and historical significance. Let your imagination wander back to an era where grand projects like these shaped not only skylines but also communities along riverscapes worldwide.
