EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Charlotte Street in Manchester, showcasing Fraser House, a former warehouse that stands proudly on the corner of Charlotte Street and Portland Street. The image is taken from the south, with a pile of rubble in the foreground hinting at a turbulent past. Constructed between 1855 and 1860 by Edward Walters, this magnificent red brick building with sandstone dressings served as a textile manufacturers warehouse. Its impressive four storeys and basement are adorned with five bays facing south and three bays to the east. A poignant reminder of darker times can be found on the south facade where a sign reads "AIR RAID SHELTER/200 PERSONS". This chilling inscription transports us back to World War II when this area was subjected to devastating air raids. The scattered rubble in front of Fraser House serves as an eerie testament to the destruction caused during those tumultuous years. Through George Bernard Wood's lens, we are transported back in time to witness both loss and resilience. This photograph encapsulates not only the architectural beauty of Victorian-era warehouses but also serves as a somber reminder of how war can leave its mark on even the most vibrant cities like Manchester.
