Barlaston pipeline JLP01_08_084420

Barlaston, Stafford, Staffordshire. A view of the Barlaston pipeline crossing the Trent and Mersey Canal during the installation of the pipeline.
The contract for the Barlaston gas pipeline was awarded to Laing Pipelines in January 1970. The pipeline ran for approximately 29 miles from Uffington, near Shrewsbury, to Barlaston in North Staffordshire. Along the route there were 61 crossings, including under the M6, the main electric railway from Euston to Crewe, two canals and six rivers, and a steep climb alongside the A34 dual carriageway near Barlaston. This photograph was published in July 1970 in the Laing monthly newsletter Team Spirit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of engineering - the installation of the Barlaston pipeline in Staffordshire, England. Taken during the 1970s, this image showcases the impressive feat achieved by Laing Pipelines as they undertook this ambitious project. Stretching across approximately 29 miles from Uffington to Barlaston, this gas pipeline required meticulous planning and execution. The photograph reveals a view of the pipeline crossing over the tranquil waters of Trent and Mersey Canal, highlighting both its integration with nature and its impact on local infrastructure. The complexity of this venture becomes evident when considering that there were 61 crossings along its route. These included major obstacles such as underpasses beneath the M6 motorway and electric railway lines connecting Euston to Crewe. Additionally, six rivers had to be traversed while maintaining environmental sensitivity. The dedication and expertise displayed by those involved in constructing this pipeline are commendable. The presence of workers captured within this frame emphasizes their commitment to completing such an intricate task successfully. Published in July 1970 as part of Laing's monthly newsletter "Team Spirit" this photograph stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in overcoming engineering challenges. It serves as a reminder not only of our ability to shape our surroundings but also highlights the importance of collaboration between industry professionals for progress.
