EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, EPW041073 from the Historic England Archive, offers a unique bird's-eye view of the iconic RMS Mauretania as she floats serenely in a Southampton dry dock in April 1933. Designed by Leonard Peskett and constructed by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson for the esteemed Cunard Line, the Mauretania was launched in September 1907 and quickly became a marvel of maritime engineering. The Mauretania, an ocean liner of unparalleled elegance and speed, is seen here in her twilight years before her final Atlantic crossing from New York to Southampton in 1934. The image captures the intricate details of her hull, the expansive deck spaces, and the imposing presence she held among the surrounding boats and structures in the dock. Leonard Peskett's innovative design, which included a distinctive forward rake and a shallow draft, allowed the Mauretania to maintain impressive speeds, making her the fastest passenger liner in the world from 1909 to 1929. The ship's career spanned over two decades, during which she set numerous records and provided luxurious transatlantic voyages for thousands of passengers. As the years passed, the Mauretania's glory began to fade, and she was eventually sold for scrap in 1935. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of her storied past and her indelible impact on the maritime world. The image, taken by Aerofilms Ltd, is a testament to the beauty and history of the RMS Mauretania, a true ocean liner icon.
