EDITORS COMMENTS
This scene is taken from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro," first performed in Vienna in 1786. In this image, captured by artist Charles A. Buchel around 1914, we find ourselves inside the Countess Almaviva's country house during a pivotal moment in the comic opera. Susanna, the Countess' maid, is attempting to send the page Cherubino away, but he hides in a chair, covered by a drape, when he hears the approaching voices of the Count and Countess. The Count, unaware of Cherubino's presence, sits down in the chair, exposing the young man to their disapproval. The Marriage of Figaro, with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, is an opera buffa that was based on Beaumarchais' play of the same name. The opera's colorful and intricate plot revolves around the themes of love, fidelity, and deception. This scene, filled with suspense and humor, is a testament to the enduring appeal of Mozart's masterpiece. The 18th-century setting is beautifully captured in this image, with its elegant furniture, ornate buildings, and rich interior decor. The contrast between the formal, grandeur of the Count's house and the mischievous antics of its inhabitants adds to the opera's charm. Charles A. Buchel's painting brings this scene to life, transporting us to a world of classical music, comedy, and intrigue. The artist's skillful use of color and detail adds depth and dimension to this moment from Mozart's beloved opera.
