The Pass of the Great Saint Bernard - Hospice of the Great St. Bernard, 1828. Artist: Edward Francis Finden

The Pass of the Great Saint Bernard - Hospice of the Great St. Bernard, 1828. Great St. Bernard Pass is the third highest road pass in Switzerland and the most ancient pass through the Western Alps, with evidence of use as far back as the Bronze Age and surviving traces of a Roman road. The St. Bernard dog breed was created at the hospice, raised as guard dogs, before they became mountain rescue dogs. After William Brockedon (1787-1854). [Rodwell, London, 1828]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "The Pass of the Great Saint Bernard - Hospice of the Great St. Bernard, 1828" takes us on a journey through time to one of Switzerland's most ancient and breathtaking mountain passes. Painted by Edward Francis Finden, this artwork beautifully captures the rugged beauty of the Great St. Bernard Pass. As we gaze at this monochromatic scene, we are transported to a world where nature reigns supreme. The majestic mountains tower above us, their peaks kissed by clouds that seem within arm's reach. A tranquil river flows gently through the valley below, reflecting the surrounding landscape like a mirror. Intriguingly, amidst this serene setting stands a building exterior that holds great historical significance – it is none other than the Hospice of the Great St. Bernard itself. This hospice has witnessed countless travelers passing through its doors since ancient times when Bronze Age inhabitants traversed these lands. Notably, it was here at this very hospice that an iconic breed was born – the St. Bernard dog. Originally bred as guard dogs for protection in these treacherous mountains, they later became renowned for their role as courageous rescuers in alpine emergencies. "The Pass of the Great Saint Bernard - Hospice of the Great St. Bernard" invites us to embark on our own geographical exploration and immerse ourselves in centuries-old history while marveling at nature's grandeur captured in exquisite detail by Edward Francis Finden's masterful engraving technique.
