Paris, 1870. Artist: Joseph Swain
Paris, 1870. France, armed and in full armour, mans her countrys defences. At Frances feet can be seen a number of contemporary newspapers, and a fools cap. This relates to the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. The French had suffered a number of heavy defeats at the hands of the Prussians. However, French newspapers had carried a number of stories applauding French victories and so the news of the Prussian advances was cause for much excitement and concern. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 3, 1870.F

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Paris, 1870" captures a significant moment in history during the Franco-Prussian war. Created by renowned artists Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this powerful image portrays France's determination to defend its country against Prussian advances. In the center of the composition stands an allegorical figure representing France herself. Clad in full armor and armed with a sword, she exudes strength and resilience. At her feet lie several contemporary newspapers, symbolizing the conflicting reports that caused both excitement and concern among the French population. Notably, amidst these newspapers rests a fool's cap—a poignant reminder of how misplaced optimism had been prevalent in French media coverage despite their heavy defeats at the hands of Prussia. This juxtaposition highlights the stark reality faced by France during this tumultuous period. The attention to detail is remarkable; every element within this monochrome engraving serves a purpose. The inclusion of cannons and weaponry emphasizes France's commitment to defending its homeland against foreign invaders. Through this thought-provoking artwork, Swain and Tenniel convey not only historical events but also capture universal themes such as patriotism, warfare, and media influence. This print serves as a testament to their artistic prowess while providing viewers with an opportunity to reflect on the complexities of war and national identity in 19th-century Europe.
