EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to New Year's Eve in 1853, inside the magnificent Crystal Palace in Sydenham. The occasion? A grand dinner hosted by renowned sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins to celebrate his completion of two awe-inspiring Iguanodon statues. But what makes this gathering truly extraordinary is the setting - the guests find themselves dining within one of these colossal dinosaur models. Amongst those present are esteemed naturalist Richard Owen, distinguished ornithologist John Gould, and accomplished scientist Edward Forbes. As they enjoy their meal surrounded by prehistoric splendor, it is a testament to the intersection of art and science that defines this era. The sculptures themselves stand proudly amidst a beautifully landscaped area of Crystal Palace Park in Bromley, South London. This black-and-white engraving from The Illustrated London News captures not only the intricate details of Hawkins' creations but also the excitement and wonderment shared by all who witnessed them. This image serves as a reminder of an age when scientific discoveries were celebrated with grandeur and imagination knew no bounds. It transports us back to a time when Victorian society marveled at both nature's mysteries and mankind's ability to recreate them through artistry. As we gaze upon this remarkable scene frozen in time, we can't help but feel inspired by these pioneering naturalists who dared to dream big and pushed boundaries in their quest for knowledge about our ancient world.
