Lord Mayors Day - the Stationers Companys barge at Lambeth Palace, 1845

Lord Mayors Day - the Stationers Companys barge at Lambeth Palace, 1845. Annual flotilla of boats on the River Thames in London. On the morning of the memorable Ninth of November, it has been customary for the Stationers Company to attend the Lord Mayor, in their superbly gilt barge, to Westminster; and to cross the River in their barge to Lambeth Palace. On their arrival, certain members of the household of his Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury come on board the barge, and bring with them hot spiced ale, buns and cakes, and a quantity of wine, wherewith the worthy " Stationers" are regaled. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Lord Mayor's Day in 1845, showcasing the Stationers Company's barge at Lambeth Palace. The annual flotilla of boats on the River Thames in London was a sight to behold, and this particular event held great significance for the Stationers Company. On that memorable Ninth of November morning, it was customary for the Stationers Company to accompany the Lord Mayor from Westminster to Lambeth Palace in their splendidly adorned gilt barge. As they arrived at their destination, members of the Archbishop of Canterbury's household boarded their barge bearing gifts - hot spiced ale, buns and cakes, along with ample wine - as a token of hospitality. The image depicts a scene filled with tradition and camaraderie. The rowing boats surrounding the magnificent steam-powered paddle steamer add depth to this snapshot from history. It is evident that this event brought together people from various walks of life: craftsmen from the Stationers Company, esteemed members of society such as those associated with Lambeth Palace, and even press representatives capturing these moments for newspapers like "Illustrated London News". Ebenezer Landells' engraving beautifully conveys both Victorian elegance and bustling activity on the river. This print serves as a testament to an era when water transport played a vital role in trade and transportation within Britain. It encapsulates not only a specific moment but also represents British heritage through its depiction of guilds like Worshipful Company of Stationers alongside other iconic landmarks such as Lambeth Palace.
