George Washingtons home, Mount Vernon, Virginia, late 19th century. Artist: John L Stoddard
George Washingtons home, Mount Vernon, Virginia, late 19th century. This plantation on the banks of the Potomac River was inherited by George Washington from his sister-in-law in 1759. Washington had the house rebuilt as it appears today and operated the estate as five separate farms. After the War of Independence he returned to Mount Vernon and resided there for a considerable amount of time during his two terms as President. After Washingtons death the fortunes of the estate declined until, in 1860 it was acquired by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union, who restored it. Today Mount Vernon is a popular tourist attraction. Photograph from Portfolio of Photographs, of Famous Scenes, Cities and Paintings by John L Stoddard, published by the Werner Company, (Chicago, c1899)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Mount Vernon, the beloved home of George Washington in late 19th century Virginia. The artist, John L Stoddard, skillfully portrays the grandeur of this historic plantation situated on the picturesque banks of the Potomac River. Originally inherited by Washington from his sister-in-law in 1759, Mount Vernon underwent extensive renovations under his careful supervision to become the stately residence we see today. Operating as five separate farms during his time, it served as a testament to Washington's dedication to agriculture and land management. After serving as President during two terms and fighting in the War of Independence, Washington returned to Mount Vernon where he resided for a significant period. However, following his death, the estate faced a decline until its acquisition by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union in 1860. Their restoration efforts ensured that future generations could appreciate this historical gem. Today, Mount Vernon stands proudly as a popular tourist attraction with its well-manicured gardens and inviting porch overlooking lush lawns. The weather vane atop one of its buildings adds charm to an already breathtaking landscape. Through this monochrome image captured by John L Stoddard for Portfolio of Photographs series published by Werner Company around 1899, viewers are transported back in time to witness firsthand George Washington's cherished residence – an enduring symbol of American history and heritage.
