EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the 19th century, showcases the Free Public Library and Museum in Liverpool, a magnificent gift to the townspeople by Sir William Brown, Esq., in the year 1860. The architectural masterpiece, designed by Thomas Allom, is situated on Shaw's-brow and boasts a grand, hexastyle Corinthian portico, reminiscent of the Temple of Juno Stator in Rome. The portico's center is recessed and accessed by steps, while the flanks and wings are enclosed by a stone balustrade and iron gates. The external walls are finished in Staffordshire bricks. The two wings each feature four Corinthian pilasters, adding to the neoclassical grandeur of the building. This architectural marvel, as described in the Illustrated London News in 1860, has stood the test of time and remains a significant tourist attraction in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The image, with its intricate details, offers a glimpse into the Victorian era and the artistic movement that shaped the city's cultural landscape.
