EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Donaldsons Hospital, later known as Donaldsons School, in mid-late 19th century Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded in 1851 by Sir James Donaldson, a prominent printer and newspaper publisher with a philanthropic spirit, this institution aimed to provide education for underprivileged boys and girls. Notably, it also welcomed applications on behalf of deaf children. The architectural brilliance of the building is evident in its elaborate Gothic/Tudor style, designed by the renowned William Henry Playfair. The structure features a quadrangle layout adorned with magnificent corner towers that add to its imposing presence. This neo-Gothic masterpiece stands as a testament to both Victorian design sensibilities and the commitment to providing quality education for all. The photographer behind this image remains unknown but has skillfully captured the essence of this historic landmark. The vibrant colors bring life to an otherwise black-and-white era while highlighting every intricate detail of the hospital's exterior. Preserved through time, this photograph allows us to step back into history and appreciate not only the architectural marvels but also Sir James Donaldson's noble vision for social change through education. It serves as a reminder that even during challenging times like those faced in the 19th century, there were individuals who dedicated themselves towards uplifting society's most vulnerable members.
