EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the grandeur of the Louvre Palace in Paris, France during the 17th century. The image showcases a decorative painting known as "Grand trumeau, petits trumeaux" located in the Gallery of Apollo (Galerie d'Apollon). This exquisite piece of art is part of the extensive restoration work carried out by Felix Duban between 1848 and 1851. The photograph captures intricate details of this baroque era masterpiece, which includes a pier glass or trumeau mirror placed on a pier - a wall between two windows supporting an upper structure. The mirror reflects its surroundings, adding depth and elegance to the already opulent interior decoration. Charles Le Brun, one of France's most renowned artists at that time, was assigned responsibility for these remarkable decorations after parts of the Louvre were rebuilt following a devastating fire in February 1661. The unknown creator behind this particular artwork skillfully incorporated foliage motifs into their design, enhancing its beauty further. This print is sourced from "An Encyclopaedia of Colour Decoration from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the XIXth Century" published by Ernst Wasmuth Ltd. Berlin in 1928. It serves as both a historical record and an artistic inspiration for those who appreciate fine craftsmanship and timeless beauty.
