EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting Clumber Park, captured around 1880 by an unknown creator. Nestled in the picturesque Nottinghamshire countryside, Clumber Park was once part of the renowned Dukeries and held a rich history. Originally a monastery, it later became home to the esteemed Dukes of Newcastle. The park underwent significant transformations over time, with its grandeur being rebuilt in the 18th century. However, tragedy struck when a devastating fire ravaged the estate in 1879. Despite efforts to restore it, Clumber Park was ultimately abandoned and eventually demolished in 1938. In this remarkable image from "A Series of Picturesque Views of Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britain". Vol. II by Francis Orpen Morris, we are transported back to witness Clumber Park's former glory. The print beautifully captures the architectural splendor amidst nature's embrace. As our eyes wander across this scene frozen in time, we can almost feel ourselves strolling through its expansive grounds. The tranquil River Poulter meanders gracefully through the landscape while lush greenery surrounds us at every turn. Though now lost to history and serving as a poignant reminder of what once stood here, this print allows us to appreciate Clumber Park's magnificence as it existed during its heyday – an idyllic sanctuary where nature intertwined seamlessly with human ingenuity and artistry.
