My Boys!, 1885. Artist: Joseph Swain

My Boys!, 1885. The British Lion watches with pride the young troops sent to help Britain by Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Britain had now been forced into conflict with the Mahdi, a former local government officer in Sudan. One of Britains finest soldiers, General Gordon, had recently died at the hands of the Mahdi, and there was now no turning back from war with Egypt. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 28, 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
My Boys!, 1885" is a powerful and symbolic print that captures the spirit of alliance and pride during a time of conflict. Created by Joseph Swain, this monochrome engraving depicts an allegorical figure representing the British Lion, watching over young troops sent to aid Britain from Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. In the late 19th century, Britain found itself embroiled in a war with Egypt after General Gordon's tragic death at the hands of the Mahdi in Sudan. This event marked a turning point for Britain as it had no choice but to engage in battle. The print reflects both the gravity of the situation and the support received from its allies. The image portrays unity through symbolism; each troop represents their respective country's commitment to assist Britain. The Australian soldier stands tall with determination, while his Canadian counterpart exudes strength and resilience. The New Zealander embodies loyalty and bravery. The British Lion gazes upon these young soldiers with immense pride, acknowledging their sacrifice for Queen and country. It serves as a reminder that even amidst conflict, alliances can strengthen resolve. Joseph Swain's artistic style combines caricature and satire to convey political messages effectively. "My Boys!, 1885" is not just an illustration; it encapsulates foreign affairs during this period while highlighting national identity. This heritage image partnership between General Gordon, John Tenniel (the creator), Joseph Swain provides us with valuable insight into historical events that shaped our world today.
