The Wolf (1826), or (1814), brig of war, late of the Royal Navy, making signal and laying to, for a pilot off Dover, 1828 (etching)

7341666 The Wolf (1826), or (1814), brig of war, late of the Royal Navy, making signal and laying to, for a pilot off Dover, 1828 (etching) by Cooke, Edward William (1811-80); 16.5x20.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Edward William Cooke
This print depicts a brig, with two masts. The Wolf of 1826, which this record had been linked to, was a three masted Ship Sloop. Therefore, it is likely the image actually depicts the Wolf of 1814 as she was a Brig Sloop. The title states that the subject is the brig of war Wolf late of the Royal Navy which also indicates that it depicts HMS Wolf (1814), as she was sold out of Admiralty service in 1825.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning etching captures the majestic brig of war 'Wolf' as it makes a signal and lays to for a pilot off Dover in 1828. The intricate details of the ship, with its two masts reaching towards the sky, showcase the craftsmanship and skill of artist Edward William Cooke. Originally thought to be depicting the Wolf of 1826, further research suggests that this print actually represents the 'HMS Wolf' from 1814, a Brig Sloop sold out of Admiralty service in 1825. The title specifies that this vessel was late of the Royal Navy, adding an air of historical significance to the scene. The British flag proudly waving in the wind symbolizes strength and power as this naval force navigates through European waters. The engraving expertly captures every line and curve of the ship, transporting viewers back to a time when maritime exploration was at its peak. As we gaze upon this work of art, we are reminded of Britain's rich naval history and its importance in shaping global trade and transportation. The 'Wolf' stands as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance on the high seas, forever immortalized in this exquisite print from the National Maritime Museum in London.
