The Peeler, a uniformed constable employed by the Metropolitan Police Force, was responsible for maintaining order in the streets of London and other urban areas. The passage of the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829 had brought about a significant increase in the number of Peelers patrolling the streets, and their presence was often met with resistance from the working classes, who saw them as a symbol of the oppressive power of the state.
