The Peeler, a uniformed constable employed by the Metropolitan Police Force, was responsible for maintaining order in the streets of London and other urban areas. The passage of the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829 had brought about a significant increase in the number of Peelers patrolling the streets, and their presence was often met with resistance from the working classes, who saw them as a symbol of the oppressive power of the state. The sale of fruit and vegetables on the streets was a common sight in 19th century Britain, and was an important source of income for many women, particularly in poorer communities. However, it was also a frequent target for the authorities, who saw it as a form of disorder and a potential health hazard. The traders were often subject to harassment and fines, and were required to move on at the behest of the Peelers.
