EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of triumph and mercy, as King Olaf II of Norway (961-1030 AD) stands victorious over his defeated foe, Erling Skjalgasson, in the Battle of Svolder in 1028 AD. Olaf, known as "Saint Olaf," ruled Norway during a tumultuous period of Viking history, marked by power struggles and internal conflicts. In this pivotal sea battle, Olaf's forces faced off against those of Skjalgasson, a powerful earl and claimant to the Norwegian throne. The fierce engagement took place in the North Sea, with both sides determined to secure their claim to the kingdom. In the end, Olaf emerged victorious, and according to the sagas, he showed great mercy to his defeated enemy. However, the moment of reconciliation was short-lived. Aslak, one of Olaf's men, could not contain his anger and resentment towards Skjalgasson. Disregarding the king's pardon, Aslak took it upon himself to avenge past grievances and slayed Skjalgasson, an act that would have far-reaching consequences. This historical event, which took place over a thousand years ago, serves as a reminder of the complexities and uncertainties of power struggles in the Viking Age. The image of King Olaf, with his shield bearing the cross, and his opponent, Skjalgasson, brandishing an axe, encapsulates the raw emotion and tension of the battlefield. This print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich and intriguing history of Norway and its kings.
