Supernova remnant 1987A

Supernova remnant 1987A. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the glowing ring of gas that is the remains of supernova 1987A. SN1987A is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy. It is thought the ring is made up of gases ejected some 20, 000 years before the central star ended its life in a supernova explosion in February 1987. The ring was illuminated by light from the explosion, but faded over time. This image shows the ring glowing brightly, as a shock wave travelling from the explosion collides with the ring of gas. This image was taken on 28 November 2003 by the Advanced Camera for Surveys

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Supernova remnant 1987A, a celestial phenomenon captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Located in the distant Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy, this image unveils a glowing ring of gas that represents the remnants of a supernova explosion from February 1987. The ring itself is believed to be composed of gases expelled approximately 20,000 years before the central star met its explosive demise. What makes this image truly remarkable is how it captures the moment when a shock wave generated by the explosion collides with the gas ring, causing it to glow brightly. Illuminated by light emitted during the cataclysmic event, this oval-shaped structure has gradually faded over time but remains an extraordinary testament to stellar death and cosmic evolution. Taken on November 28th, 2003 using HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), this photograph offers us an intriguing glimpse into our vast universe. Its elliptical shape and ethereal luminosity evoke both wonder and curiosity about our place in space. As we contemplate this mesmerizing scene, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable thirst for knowledge and understanding as we continue to explore and unravel mysteries beyond our planet Earth. This stunning visual representation serves as a reminder that even in destruction lies beauty - an eternal dance between creation and annihilation within our ever-expanding cosmos.
