EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Soil Structure and Fauna" takes us on a journey through the hidden world beneath our feet. The vertical section of soil showcases a diverse range of structures and fauna, offering a glimpse into the intricate web of life that exists within this seemingly ordinary medium. Starting from left to right, we encounter various organisms inhabiting different layers of the soil. At the surface layer, organic mulch provides nourishment while rocks form the bottom layer. Our eyes are immediately drawn to a woodlouse, followed by a fascinating fungus fruiting body with its underground hyphae. As we delve deeper, we come across a centipede and an intriguing white beetle larva accompanied by nematode worms below them. A common earthworm gracefully makes its way lower down in search of nutrients while roots of a clover-type legume plant intertwine with bacterial nodules nearby. The upper right corner reveals an ant-hill mound with tunnels bustling with activity. A slug can be spotted sluggishly making its way through this vibrant ecosystem alongside another earthworm tunneling through the soil. This extraordinary illustration not only highlights the diversity but also emphasizes the interconnectedness between these organisms and their environment. It serves as a reminder that even in something as unassuming as soil lies an entire world teeming with life waiting to be explored.
