SEM of the mouth & sucker of the bilharzia fluke

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the mouth (left) & sucker (centre) of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni, one of three species which cause Bilharzia (schistosomiasis). The larval stage of the flukes life cycle occurs within freshwater snails; humans contract the disease when larvae released from the snails penetrate the skin of persons bathing in infected water. The adult flukes eventually settle in the intestinal blood vessels, where the release of their eggs may cause anaemia & inflammation. Additional symptoms may include diarrhoea, dysentery, enlargement of the spleen & liver, and cirrhosis of the liver. Magnification: x550 at 6x7 cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of the mouth and sucker of the bilharzia fluke, Schistosoma mansoni. Through false-color scanning electron microscopy, we are granted a rare glimpse into the world of this blood fluke that causes Bilharzia or schistosomiasis. The life cycle of these parasites involves freshwater snails as hosts for their larval stage. When humans come into contact with infected water, the larvae released from these snails penetrate their skin, leading to infection. Once inside the body, adult flukes settle in intestinal blood vessels where they release eggs that can cause anaemia and inflammation. Beyond these primary symptoms lie additional afflictions such as diarrhoea, dysentery, spleen and liver enlargement, and even cirrhosis of the liver. The consequences are severe and demand immediate attention. At a magnification level of x550 on a 6x7 cm size image, this SEM print offers an up-close exploration into the world of platyhelminthes - flatworms - specifically focusing on schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni. Through this stunning visual representation provided by Science Photo Library's expertise in nature photography and zoology documentation, we gain insight into not only one aspect but also multiple facets encompassing wildlife biology research related to invertebrates like bilharzia flukes.
