HIV particles, artwork C016 / 8654

HIV particles, computer artwork. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The virus consists of an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome (pink), surrounded by an icosahedral (20-sided) protein nucleocapsid (coat, blue). The whole virus is enclosed in an envelope (green) derived from the host cells plasma membrane. The envelope has viral proteins integrated into it, including glycoprotein spikes that aid its attachment to host cells. HIV infects the immune systems T-lymphocytes, ultimately killing them, leading to a very weak immune system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "HIV particles" offers a visually stunning representation of the complex structure and devastating impact of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Created by Russell Kightley for Science Photo Library, this computer-generated print showcases the intricate details of HIV's composition. At its core, HIV consists of an RNA genome depicted in vibrant pink hues. Surrounding this genetic material is a striking icosahedral protein nucleocapsid coat in brilliant blue shades. The entire viral structure is enclosed within a green envelope derived from the host cell's plasma membrane. This envelope incorporates various viral proteins, including glycoprotein spikes that aid in attaching to host cells. The significance of this artwork lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its portrayal of HIV as a formidable pathogen responsible for causing acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). By infecting T-lymphocytes within our immune system, HIV ultimately leads to their destruction and weakens our body's ability to defend against infections and diseases. With elements encompassing virology, biology, medicine, and microbiology, this illustration serves as both an educational tool and a testament to the ongoing scientific efforts aimed at understanding and combatting HIV/AIDS. It reminds us of the urgent need for continued research and awareness surrounding this global health crisis.
