Dust storm over the Red Sea

Dust storm spreading out over the Red Sea. This view is looking south, looking toward the mainland of Africa in southern Sudan. A plume of dust is seen traversing the Red Sea, carried by a westerly wind funnelling through a gap in the coastal mountains. The wind responsible for this storm is a localised feature that runs opposite to the prevailing tropical easterly winds of the region. The small piece of land seen at bottom left is part of the Saudi Arabian coast. This photograph was taken from Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-50 of 25 June to 9 July 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of a dust storm spreading out over the Red Sea. The view, looking south towards the mainland of Africa in southern Sudan, showcases a remarkable plume of dust traversing the vast expanse of water. What makes this phenomenon even more intriguing is that it is caused by a localized wind feature running counter to the prevailing tropical easterly winds of the region. The image reveals how this westerly wind funnels through a gap in the coastal mountains, carrying with it an immense amount of dust particles. From space, aboard Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-50 from 25 June to 9 July 1992, this unique perspective allows us to appreciate both the scale and beauty of nature's forces at play. Intriguingly, amidst this expansive scene lies a small piece of land belonging to Saudi Arabia's coast, serving as a stark reminder of humanity's presence within these natural wonders. This photograph serves as not only an exquisite example of Earth imagery but also provides valuable insights into meteorology and climate patterns. Captured by Science Photo Library during Mission STS-50, this stunning visual representation invites contemplation on our planet's intricate weather systems and their impact on our environment. It reminds us that despite our technological advancements and scientific understanding, there are still countless mysteries waiting to be unraveled in our ever-changing world.
