Art of Diatom algae (from Ernst Haeckel)
Diatoms. Computer-enhanced engraving of assorted species of diatom. Diatoms are a group of single- celled algae. The two main morphological types of diatom are represented here: pennate (rod-shaped) and centric (rounded). A characteristic feature of diatoms is their intricately patterned, glass-like cell wall, or frustule. The frustule consists of two halves which fit together like the lid and bottom of a box. It is often decorated with rows of tiny holes, known as striae. Diatoms form an important part of the floating plankton in the marine and freshwater food chains. Engraving taken from Ernst Haeckels famous treatise: " Art Forms of Nature" (1904)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of diatom algae, as depicted in Ernst Haeckel's renowned work "Art Forms of Nature". Diatoms are a group of single-celled algae, and this computer-enhanced engraving displays a variety of species. The image highlights the two main morphological types of diatoms: pennate, which have a rod-shaped structure, and centric, which possess a rounded shape. One striking characteristic of diatoms is their exquisitely patterned cell wall, known as frustule. Resembling glass-like structures, these frustules consist of two halves that fit together like the lid and bottom of a box. Adding to their allure are rows of tiny holes called striae that often adorn the frustule's surface. Diatoms play an essential role in both marine and freshwater ecosystems as they form part of the floating plankton within food chains. Their presence contributes to sustaining life in these environments. This artful engraving from Haeckel's treatise not only captures the scientific essence but also celebrates the aesthetic appeal found within nature itself. It serves as a reminder that even microscopic organisms can possess astonishing beauty worth admiring. This mesmerizing print is brought to you by Science Photo Library—an extraordinary depiction showcasing nature's artistic side while shedding light on botanical wonders such as diatom algae.
