Home Decor From Royal Cornwall Museum
Cottages in Manaccan, Cornwall. Around 1925
The tower of St Manaccus and St Dunstan Church can be seen through the trees on the left. Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in some cases, painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the quaint cottages nestled in the charming village of Manaccan, Cornwall, around 1925. Through the lush trees on the left, one can catch a glimpse of the majestic tower belonging to St Manaccus and St Dunstan Church. The talented Major Arthur William Gill, a Cornishman and amateur photographer renowned during the 1920s and 1930s, captured this picturesque scene with his ordinary camera. Major Gill's passion for photography extended beyond simply capturing still images; he also presented cine films and slides to various esteemed groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and London Cornish Society. His quarter plate slides were particularly prolific, some even enhanced by his own artistic touch through hand-painting techniques. The thatched roofs adorning these traditional Cornish cottages exude an undeniable charm that is synonymous with this region. Situated in the Meneage parish on the Lizard Peninsula near Helston, this idyllic village offers a serene escape from bustling city life
