The Ottoman Empire, allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary, had been in control of Mesopotamia since the early years of the war. However, the British Empire, determined to secure the region's valuable resources and strategic importance, launched a campaign to take back the territory. In this image, Turkish soldiers are seen laying down their weapons and surrendering to the British troops.
