EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Lady Milbanke, later known as Sheila Chisholm, graced the cover of Tatler magazine in 1934. Born in Australia as Margaret Sheila Mackellar Chisholm, she would later become Lady Loughborough after marrying Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough. Tragically, her first husband died in 1929. In the 1950s, Lady Milbanke made headlines once again when she married Sir John Milbanke and later, in 1954, Prince Dmitri Romanoff. The portrait was captured by the renowned British photographer Yevonde (Margaret Sheila Mackellar Chisholm, later known as Lady Yevonde), who was celebrated for her innovative approach to portrait photography. In this image, Lady Milbanke exudes an air of sophistication and beauty, embodying the glamour and elegance of the 1930s upper class. The portrait is a testament to Lady Milbanke's enduring allure and her place in social history. Lady Milbanke's life was marked by scandal, intrigue, and high society. Her first marriage to Lord Loughborough was short-lived, but her subsequent marriages to Sir John Milbanke and Prince Dmitri Romanoff kept her in the news for decades. This portrait, taken during her first marriage, captures a moment in time when she was at the height of her beauty and social status. The portrait is a stunning example of the art of portrait photography in the 1930s and a reminder of the enduring allure of the upper class during this era. Lady Milbanke's story is one of beauty, scandal, and intrigue, and this portrait is a fitting tribute to her fascinating life.
